We Baptize By Immersion For The Remission Of Sins
We believe that the proper method of baptism is not done by pouring or sprinkling, but by lowering the person completely under water. The word ‘baptize’ is translated from the Greek word ‘baptizo’ meaning to dip repeatedly, to submerge, or immerse. To immerse means to cover completely with water.
We can look to the example of Philip, an evangelist, as he speaks to an Ethiopian who had questions about what is needed to be baptized. After telling the Ethiopian that he needed to believe with all his heart that Jesus is the Son of God, they both went down into the water so Philip could baptize him. So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.
Baptism is a symbol of a burial. After Jesus’ death He was buried in a tomb. When someone decides to be baptized they must also be buried; buried by water.
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
In order to be baptized we believe one must first complete the steps of salvation: hearing, believing, confessing, and repenting. For this reason we do not baptize infants, since they are not yet able to hear or believe, and they have no sins to confess or repent of.
